CHALLENGE

Located in a growing metropolitan area, the Center was facing increased demand for its services. To meet the needs of this increased population, the Center began exploring ways to expand its program space.

SOLUTION

Through a Mission Advancement Planning Study, it was determined that donors were more receptive to a satellite location rather than a larger facility. A capital campaign was launched to raise funds to build the additional location.

RESULTS

With Mission Advancement’s guidance, the Center exceeded its initial objective of $10 million within the original 24-month timeframe. Operational funding increased by 30% within the first year, ahead of plan, and continued to grow throughout the capital campaign.

LISTENING TO DONORS

The original concept was to relocate and build a larger facility in a more central location within the county. However, results of the planning study showed that key donors were not enthusiastic about the plan or the price tag associated with the move. Mission Advancement worked with the Center’s leadership to study alternate models and collect additional demographic data. Ultimately, the decision was made to retain the current site and launch a northern satellite location.

THE APPROACH

Mission Advancement assessed the current development team and made recommendations to reorganize positions, update job descriptions, and refresh the fundraising approach. A 24-month capital campaign was launched to raise funds to build the satellite location. Additionally, a model was created to simultaneously grow operating revenue over the next 5 years to support the expansion.
